
Community Training Homes
Community Training Homes give adults with disabilities the chance to live in a safe, nurturing, homelike environment with trained caregivers. Caregivers are everyday citizens who open their homes to provide personalized, daily support helping individuals thrive as a part of a family and community.
Who Qualifies?
CTH homes are for individuals eligible for services through the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs. To qualify, individuals must meet criteria in one of the following categories:

Intellectual Disability

Related Disability
-
Head Injury
-
Autism Spectrum Disorder
-
Spinal Cord Injury
-
Similar Disability (related to head or spinal cord injuries)
DDSN may determine a need for residential services if an individual:

Has been abused, neglected, or exploited
-
Is homeless or leaving a temporary placement
-
Has seriously harmed themselves or others
-
Was judicially admitted to DDSN
-
Has lost a primary caregiver
-
Has a caregiver over age 80 with diminished capacity

Resident Rights
Every individual placed in a CTH home is entitled to the same rights as any citizen, including:

A safe, fully accessible living environment

Privacy, dignity, and freedom from coercion or restraint

Autonomy and choice in daily life and services
-
A legal lease or residential agreement
-
Lockable doors, roommate choice, and personalized furnishings
-
Integration into community life and activities
-
Control over schedule, food access, and visitors
-
A home that passes strict safety and utility inspections
-
No more than 2 residents per caregiver/provider
Becoming a Caregiver
Opening your home as a Community Training Home is a meaningful commitment, but you won't do it alone. We'll guide you through every step of the process and provide ongoing support once a resident is placed in your care.
